Cristo and Jeanne-Claude Questions
- What is the effect of 'time' on the work?
'Time' has multiple effects on Christo and Jeanne-Claude's works. In the sense of deterioration and decay, time has a great impact on the end result of the work. As the materials used are often very fragile and delicate, time can have a great influence on the state that the material is in. If the artwork is left for a longer period of time it may be more worn out and discoloured, whereas in a shorter period of time or at the beginning of this time it will look new and fresh.
- Does the temporary nature of the work make it more important?
I don't think the temporary nature of the work makes it more important, but it can make it more desirable to view. Artworks that are temporary and artworks that are not temporary can be just as important as each other. I think it depends greatly on the individuals opinion and experiences, whether they decide it is more important or less important than permanent artworks. There is a sense of desperation to see the work because of its temporary nature, each person wants to see it for themselves before it is taken away forever.
- What happens after it is removed? How do we know it existed?
After it is removed, the only evidence of its existence would be forms of documentation. Thus, documentation of their work is very important, so that it may still be viewed and remembered after it has been removed.
- What challenges do site specific/installation artists face?
Site specific/installation artists may face many different challenges. This may include factor such as, weather/season or time/duration. Weather conditions can be a very serious challenge for these artists because some artworks may not be able to be created under certain conditions. Such as an ice sculpture would melt quickly on a hot, sunny day. Time and duration may also be a challenge for artists because they may have a fixed period of time in which they are able to create the artwork, and they are unsure if they will be able to create it in that time, etc. Because they don't necessarily have a practise artwork, it may mean that their artwork completely fails and is a disaster.
